I really botched up my first assignment. LOL >-<
Hard to say whether I am fully to blame because the questions were so vague that the slightest misperception on the intended answer meant you’re dried, skinned and roasted. I can’t really comprehend the skill of legal writing. It’s not that I disagree with the idea of teaching legal writing. But when I can’t even ask direct questions about the topic then we’re getting into grey territory here. I don’t know what is right and what is wrong. It’s basically a gamble to see who gets the rule right. Some are better at it; not me of course. This is vaguely similar to the summary we used to to in Form 5.
Now that we’re given the opportunity to rewrite, the stress level increases. There are conflicting principles in legal writing. First, there is no right answer. Second, the only answer they want is perfection. How do we imperfect mortals cope?
The best we can. What else can we do?
Ooh I got a solo part. I certainly hope I don’t screw up.
I realised that choir singing and opera singing is fundamentally different. I seriously have a hard time blending my voice into theirs.
On an unrelated note, now that I have a keyboard I can embark on a mission to acquire as many pirated scores and break as many Singaporean laws on copyright issues in the book.
I went on one of my few excursions into the hustle and bustle of Orchard again. This time to watch Singapore Dreaming.
Now if you were hoping for a good synopsis, please be disappointed. Settle for a sucky one instead. I am not so hardworking. Basically it’s a story about a family whose members’ ties are fundamentally fractured. They are generally civil to each other but they each have their grouses and secrets.
When the father strikes lottery and subsequently dies, the shit hits the ceiling and all the ugliness spills out.
Very nice and touching movie. Not bad. I’d say it was worth my 5 bucks. The coke however, was horrendously overpriced.
From too little badminton to too much.
I’d been fishing around for some time, trying to get some invites to play badminton. Surprise surprise I got them all on the same day.
Ended up with a 4 hour marathon badminton session. I’m seriously gonna get a cramp.
BTW, I love my new shoes and racket.
I had to study till 3 am yesterday to make up for lost time. Choir takes up 6-7 hours on thursdays including travelling time. On the bright side, my Tort lecturer, who threatened to put me in the spot because I made a smart remark about law school being easy, was pretty impressed when he shot me with questions. Omissions was interesting.
My cluster neighbour is Swedish 5th year law student here in Singapore on exchange. After some conversations with me he couldn’t believe I was a freshie in law. LOL. I hope that’s a good thing.
Breach of contract is pretty interesting, but extremely vague. Apparently it depends heavily on the current circumstances where the judge has to weigh the 2 factors, 1) Fairness by flexibility and 2) certainty by strict intepretation. English law is supposedly trending towards certainty but still, I see some cases that were neither fair, nor a strict interpretation of the terms of the contract.
I want to get a keyboard, but the amount of time I’ll spend travelling makes me balk. What to do? Shall I sign my card yet? Sigh, the little decisions in life.
LAWR seems to be a lot about using simple English. Hey, if even lawyers have to use simple English then what was the point of learning all the complex stuff in secondary school?? Also, what would happen to the prestige of the profession when people can actually understand them? The horror!!
My computer has been having PMS lately. Funny. I’d been studying 5-10 hours a day with little or no stress. Computer throws a tantrum and I’m on the verge of a nervous breakdown. This is freakishly akin to having an extremely demanding job which you do with no pain, but if you have a wife with PMS……..
Anyway I just completed my Mallal Moots. Unfortunately my computer chose to dump me yesterday, I lost everything I was supposed to argue and had to come up with everything from scratch in 1.5 hours. Lovely. I survived nonetheless.
I just did about 300 pages of my 500 word assignment. I currently spend about 2 hours a day in classes and 9 hours a day studying.
Law school is seriously damn challenging.
Haven’t been posting for a while. With good reason too. Been a bit too busy with my preparations for my lectures and tutorials. On Monday we had 4 slots filled, a Contract lecture, a LAWR lecture, a LAWR tutorial and an SLS seminar.
The Contract lecture was almost pointless, much of which was spent doing introductions and cracking lame jokes. However it ended on a more lighter note when we did manage to learn a bit about "offer".
The LAWR tutorial was also about introductions mainly, but I got the feeling our tutor had a good sense of humor which is always good.
LAWR lecture wasn’t that interesting because we touched on the philosophical aspects of law but then again, it wasn’t half bad either.
The SLS seminar was seriously a waste of time. I’ll put it at that.
Today we had a Contract lecture which was very interesting, but failed to address many issues on my mind due to time contraints. We desparately need more hours in our lectures.
Anyway, I can’t wait for the campus renovations to finally be completed. As of now, we are made to walk in circles to get where we need to go. Also, when the weather takes a turn for the worse, we have to walk under the rain at times.
After 2 days of school, I must have at least done 20+ hours of preparation. Kudos to myself. It helps if the subject matter is interesting.
